Project Overview

Wryst is a wearable device that will fundamentally shift the way we maintain hand hygiene, creating a lasting habit that protects ourselves, our loved ones, and the world from infectious disease. The product is wrist mountable, operating with a cartridge system allowing users to effortlessly clean their hands several times a day before replacing the cartridge with a new one when finished.

Both a mobile app and a smart watch widget will be created to allow users to track compliance.

Discovery

Understanding The Science

We began by trying to understanding how we could improve compliance. As this project was carried out during a national lockdown, in response to COVID-19; to speed up the discovery process we also turned to the scientific literature to draw insights from.

Insights

Learnings From Science

After reading the literature there were two clear points on which we were going to forumualte our hypothesis.

Compliance is correlated to ease.

In hospitals where wall mounted sanitising dispensors were used the compliance of doctors were approximately 40%, and when doctors were told to carry a personal hand sanitising bottle, compliance went up to 60%.

Correlation with compliance and safety

By cleaning your hands once an hour, a user could reduce the spread of infectious disease by over 70%.

The product was designed as a silicone band with a plastic replaceable cartridge. Each cartridge has enough sanitiser to last one day with hourly hand cleaning.

Solution

App

To keep everything in line with the product image of clean simplicity, we ensured the app only had a 3 key pages; main page, handwash data, temperature data.

Widget

Due to the limited space on a watch face, we decided to build a widget that shows the time until the next handwash which is done hourly. On the hour, the watch will vibrate reminding the user to wash their hands.

Key Project Lesson

Agility is Essential

During the project there were several times that we had to make rapid decisions based on the changing global environment to ensure that our product makes it to market as soon as possible, and provide the greatest impact. To keep everything moving fast we set up a single channel of communication specifically for key decisions.
